This initiative stems from a growing awareness that biases can significantly limit environmental health sciences (EHS) research. Concerns including the lack of inclusive datasets in the use of artificial intelligence, which may amplify existing biases, and long-standing issues regarding race and ethnicity corrections for spirometry are two examples of the broad spectrum of biases that we seek to identify and address.
The collaborative nature of this working group with membership from 16 different Environmental Health Sciences Core Centers (EHSCC) spanning 12 different states, will leverage diverse strengths and perspectives to address this NIEHS priority area. The working group is a partnership between the Community Engagement Core (CEC) and
the Translational Research Support Core (TRSC).
Bias in research methods is a complicated and multi-faceted topic. We are working collaboratively to identify priorities and clarify the scope, objectives, goals, and outcomes for the working group. This work is ongoing and in the early stages. Preliminary goals include:
Convened the BiRWG: The group plans to discuss considerations for addressing bias in research methods on a scheduled basis.
Understanding Group Priorities & Strategies: Virtual conversations via Zoom & surveys are being used to guide working group strategies and eventual products to address the goals.
The BiRWG is committed to continuously improving research practices by integrating diverse perspectives and promoting inclusive methodologies. If you are a NIEHS grantee interested in participating in this effort, please reach out to Diana Rohlman ([email protected]) to join the group.
